One Child Image Problems-Updated

China is concerned about it’s image, now that the country is going to be flooded with foreigners for the 2008 Summer Olympics. They are going to take down some of their one child policy slogans such as:

“Raise fewer babies but more piggies”

“Houses toppled, cows confiscated, if abortion demand rejected”

“One more baby means one more tomb”

These slogans are painted on homes and walls throughout the country, but are supposedly counter-productive and crude. Before next year they want to change them to things like:

“Mother Earth is too tired to sustain more children”.

Talk about a culture that hates children! The interesting thing is that all this talk of over-population is untrue. China is now paying the price for this policy since 117 boys are born for every 100 girls, and population in places like China and India are also seeing their overall population decline, something that the Chinese government and the U.N. readily admit .

Notice that China is not altering their one child policy, just making the slogans softer. Hating children is still offensive to me, no matter how soft the slogans are. And once the Olympics are over, you can bet that the more offensive slogans will go back up.

I suppose the Chinese are supposed to be grateful because:

“People in the cities can have a second child if both the husband and wife come from one-child families and farm couples are allowed to have another child if their first was a girl. Many ethnic minorities are allowed to have two children, and there are no restrictions on the number of children that Tibetans can have.”

Such generous policies. (dripping with sarcasm here)

I came across this article, which interestingly enough was written on July 25, 2007. The first one that I quoted above was published on August 6, 2007. They are concerned about their slogans, but:

“A central China province that exposed nearly 2,000 officials for breaking strict one-child policies is planning tough fines for wealthy couples who have unauthorized children, state media reported Wednesday.

“The current penalties are too low for well-off people, and we are raising them to ensure social justice,” an unnamed official with the Hunan Family Planning Commission was quoted as saying by Xinhua.”

Again, this proves my point-they will not, nor do they have any intention of changing their one child policy, even though as I said earlier, their own government admits they have a population decline. All they care about is how they appear to foreigners-the ones that don’t bother to keep track of world events and will gush about how great China is and shouldn’t we be more like them.

And who thinks they will stop with only the “wealthy”? I also noted how this earlier article said that “limits…rural families to two…” giving one the impression that all rural families can have two children without the State interfering, which is a lie.

I did quote this above but it bears repeating-rural families can only have two children if their first child was a girl. If their first child is a boy, no, they are not allowed another child.

And there are those people that want us to be more like them in our policies?

No, thank you.
